Why I Named My Plugin After a Japanese Word for Full Bloom

People keep asking about the name. “Mankai” doesn’t sound like a WordPress plugin. It doesn’t have “Press” or “Portal” or “Suite” in it. It doesn’t tell you what it does from the name alone.

That was intentional.

The meaning

Mankai (written as an ideographic phrase in Japanese) means “full bloom.” It’s the word used to describe cherry blossoms at their peak. The moment when every flower on the tree is open at the same time. It’s brief, it’s beautiful, and it represents something reaching its full potential.

That felt right for what I was building. A tool that helps freelancers and photographers run their business at full capacity. Not a tool that holds them back with subscription limits and feature gates.

The personal connection

I’m into Japanese car culture. I drive a GR86. I follow Super GT. I’ve spent more money on car parts than I probably should admit on a professional website. The Japanese approach to building things carefully, precisely, and with long-term durability in mind is something I respect deeply.

When I was picking a name, I wanted something that connected to that mindset. Not just “ClientPortalPro” or whatever the SEO-optimized version would be. Something that meant something to me personally.

The branding choice

I know the smart business move would have been to name it something immediately descriptive. “WP Client Hub” or “FreelancerStack” or whatever would rank faster on Google. But I’m building a company I actually want to run for 10 years. And I don’t want to spend 10 years saying a name I don’t care about.

Mankai is the name. It means full bloom. It’s a WordPress client portal plugin. And if the name doesn’t immediately tell you that, the product will.
