My mom is a photographer. My dad is a dairy farmer.
I grew up on a small dairy farm in Wisconsin, which means I grew up around two kinds of work that never stop: cows that need milking twice a day, and a photography business that runs from the kitchen table. Culling galleries at night, chasing invoices, re-typing the same emails to every client. The work was beautiful. The business side was a grind.
And every year, the grind got a little more expensive. One subscription for galleries. Another for contracts and invoices. Another for booking. Each one made sense on its own. Together they added up to hundreds of dollars a year, sometimes thousands, every year, forever. We didn't have a lot of money, so I noticed. When a tool raised its prices, there was no negotiation. You paid, or you exported what they let you export and started over somewhere else.
That always bothered me. Not because software should be free. It shouldn't; good software is work. It bothered me because the people making the photos never actually owned any of it. Not the gallery their client clicked through. Not the contract archive. Not even the list of their own clients. It was all rented, one missed payment away from disappearing.
On a farm, when equipment breaks, you don't subscribe to a tractor. You fix the one you own. I build software for a living, so I built the thing I kept wishing existed: a complete client system for booking, galleries, contracts, invoices, payments, email, and automation that installs into WordPress and belongs to you. Your server. Your database. Your domain on every page and every email your clients ever see.
I named it Mankai, and it runs on one promise:
You should own your platform, own your data, and run your business without renting it back one subscription at a time.
The license costs less than most tools charge for a single quarter, and it covers updates and support. The plugin itself keeps working either way. Your client list lives in your database, not mine. If Mankai isn't for you, you keep every record it ever created. There's no growth team designing the cancel flow. There's just me, shipping updates every week, writing the docs myself, and answering my own support email.
That's the deal. It's the one I wish someone had offered my mom.
Mankai (満開) is Japanese for "full bloom," the moment everything you grew finally opens. That's the goal for the studios that run on it.
